Frank Martin (Brett Davis-US PRESSWIRE)
Columbia, SC (WLTX) - It appears Frank Martin from Kansas State is the leading candidate to take over the USC men's basketball program.
The Sporting News is reporting USC has asked for permission to speak with Martin about the job.
There had been reports Martin had already interviewed for the opening but he has told the Kansas City Star and other media outlets that he hasn't talked to anyone about the job.
In five years in Manhattan, Kansas he has taken the Wildcats to four NCAA tournament appearances and one NIT.
Martin is scheduled to be in the New York studios with the CBS crew as part of the network's Elite 8 coverage.
Another name that is perculating near the top for the Gamecocks' vacancy is former USC assistant Tubby Smith, who has had stops at Georgia, Kentucky, and now Minnesota.
However, it appears Smith is the fallback candidate with Martin being the primary target.
