McLean, VA (written by Douglas Stanglin/USA Today) --
A powerful magnitude-7.6 earthquake struck in Costa Rica today, triggering a tsunami warning for nearby areas, the U.S. Geological Survey reports.
The USGS says the quake hit about 88 miles west of San Jose, the capital.
The tsunami warning initially issued had covered most of Central America, but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has reduced the warning area to include only Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua.
