Columbia, SC (WLTX)- "The Columbia Cup" is a friendly wager between two Mayors.
"We want to get this rivalry started off right and some guys at CBS Sports had the idea and Mayor McDavid and I were 200 percent on board," said Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin.
Columbia, South Carolina- obviously home of the Gamecocks and Columbia, Missouri- home of the University of Missouri Tigers.
Missouri is taking on the Gamecocks for the first time as a member of the SEC Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium but this isn't their first matchup.
They have played twice before: The first time back in 1979 and again in 2005, the Gamecocks came up short both times. Mayor Benjamin says he is confident in the Garnet and Black.
"That cup will be in this office based on the talent on the grid iron and the superior coaching staff lead by coach Spurrier."
The winner of the game gets to keep the "Columbia Cup", but the head ball coach says he is focused on what's happening on the field.
"We don't care if you are from Georgia, Missouri or California. It doesn't mean that much to our guys, you just to concern them with playing their assignments the very best they can no matter who the opponent is," said Coach Steve Spurrier.
USC takes on Missouri at 3:30 p.m. in a game which will broadcast on CBS/WLTX. WLTX will also have an hour-long pre-game special before CBS coverage begins. That will air at 2 p.m. We'll also have a post-game program following the conclusion of the game.
