SUMTER, SC (WLTX) Sumter police have arrested a man accused of taking money from financial accounts belonging to the Plaza Church of Christ.
According to Sumter police, Todd Newman, 49 of Sumter, has taken over $155,000 from financial accounts belonging to the church but that dollar amount could go as high as $400,000.
Investigators say a church elder reported that Newman, who was in charge of the church's finances over the span of several years was cashing unauthorized checks made to himself.
Newman is running for the District 5 council seat in the November election.
Police have charged Newman with Breach of Trust with Fraudulent Intent and if convicted he could face up to a 10-year prison sentence.
The investigation is still ongoing and Newman may face additional charges according to police.
Newman is currently being held at the Sumter Lee Regional Detention Center where he is awaiting a bond hearing. Anyone with information in reference to this incident is asked to contact the Sumter Police department.
