Camden, SC (WLTX) - The city attorney for Camden has been placed on unpaid administrative leave following his arrest on misconduct in office charges.
Thursday night, the Camden City Council placed Charles Cushman, 59, on unpaid administrative leave pending a further review. The council says Cushman asked for the leave.
"We appreciate Mr. Cushman requesting to be placed on administrative leave," said Mayor Jeffrey Graham. "City Council has accepted this request as he and this council both recognize that this is the appropriate action to maintain the highest level of professional standards and to ensure that the residents of Camden have confidence in our city government."
State Law Enforcement Division agents arrested Cushman Wednesday. Arrest warrants against him say Cushman dropped or decline to prosecute a case in exchange for defense donations to the Camden City Drug Fund.
No other city employees have been implicated.
Cushman was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.
He has served as Camden City Attorney since 1987.
