The mother of 21-year-old John Dickerson sent News19 these photos of his recovery in a Columbia Hospital bed. While he's expected to be released late Thursday afternoon, his manager at Waste Industries is disgusted with the hit and run accident.
"It's heartbreaking to know that there are folks out there that are that senseless with human life and with a guy that's out there trying to make an honest living," said Reynolds.
General manager Jeff Reynolds says Dickerson suffered a broken leg, a broken jaw, and multiple lacerations to his head when a truck driving down Killian Road, hit him while he was working on the back of a trash truck.
"The mirror of the passenger side of the truck caught John and literally pinned him between our vehicle and theirs," said Reynolds.
Dickerson's mother tells News19 that she is focused on getting her son better, but says she wants whoever put him in the hospital to turn themselves in. Reynolds wants the public to take more notice to those working in the road.
"We've got these big trucks with these lights that flash saying ok hang out for a minute and let us do our job. I almost want people to treat us like a school bus," said Reynolds.
While it was only Dickerson's first month on the job, Reynolds says it an accident that should have never happened to anyone no matter their experience.
"It's one of the worst incidents I have delt with in the last five years," said Reynolds.
Investigators are looking for a lawn care service truck with a white cab and green flat bed, as a vehicle of interest in this case. It might have damage to its right passenger mirror. If you have any information about the crash, or the lawn care truck, you're asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
