14th Annual Dam Swim for Drew Draws Over 200

Lake Murray, SC (WLTX) -- Saturday, September 15th more than 200 swimmers participated in a 2 mile swim across Lake Murray to honor the memory of Drew Smith.

Joseph Drew Smith was 11 years old when he died on Lake Murray in 1997. This annual event celebrates the difference Smith's passing has made to boating safety in South Carolina.

In 1999 the Boating Safety and Reform Act, known as "Drew's Law," went into effect, raising penalties for boating violations such as Boating Under the Influence. 

Since Drew's Law was put in place, boating fatalities statewide have dropped. 

The Annual Dam Swim for Drew is held to promote water and boating safety, and demonstrated community support for Drew's Law. 

Awards were given to the 1st place winners for Male, Female, and Age categories. This year's annual swim also included an optional 5k run, where 1st place in various categories were also awarded. 

The overall winner was Kyle Kemp of Greer, with a time of 39 minutes. 2nd and 3rd place awards went to Jonathan Boland and Michael King.
