COLUMBIA, SC (WLTX) Robin Smith, 38 a correctional officer at the Alvin S. Glenn detention center, has been charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.
Sheriff Leon Lott says that on February 11, Smith kicked the victim repeatedly in the head and side and put his boot onto the victim's head and neck while pulling the victim's arm the opposite direction.
The victim was booked into the detention center on charges of trespassing by the University of South Carolina Police Department on February 7.
Investigators began to look into the cause of the victims injuries. According to Sheriff Leon Lott, on February 21, ten days after the assault, the staff at Palmetto Health Richland notified the sheriff's department of an inmate who was brought to the hospital in critical condition. The victim was taken to the hospital on Feb 15, according to Snowden.
Smith was terminated on February 25, for failing to follow jail procedure according to Richland County public information officer Stephany Snowden.
Investigators say The staff of the Alvin S. Glenn detention center is cooperating with investigators and hospital officials have told the Sheriff's office that the victim is in critical but stable condition at this time.
