Columbia, SC (WLTX) Columbia city council has agreed to open the citys emergency shelter on September 24 pending approval of the contract between the city and Christ Central ministries.
Members of Columbia's business community held a news conference this morning and said that city leaders must work to provide relief for businesses and the homeless.
The Winter Shelter plan to help with Columbia's homeless has drawn much criticism.
The plan would make officers enforce the law of loitering and sleeping in public parks.
Christ Central says they are not interested in running the winter shelter if a long term plan for the homeless was not in place.
Columbia Interim Police Chief Ruben Santiago says that they will not add officers to patrol the area where the shelter is.
He says he is confident that the current officers that patrol the Metro Region will have time to partrol the area.
City council will meet again in two weeks to discuss the contract negotiations.
