Columbia, SC (WLTX)- Governor Nikki Haley declared the month of September "Childhood Cancer Awareness Month."
The proclamation aims to raise awareness of the effects of cancer on kids and their families and also highlight the need for continued research into understanding and finding a cure.
Gillian Plasman is all too familiar with the difficulties of childhood cancer.
"My son [Owen] was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in January of 2013," said Plasman.
Gillian has pledged to walk 100 miles to raise money for cancer research.
"Walking 100 miles in honor of my son is nothing in comparison to what he has gone through."
Owen spent 4 hours of his afternoon receiving chemotherapy at Palmetto Health Children's Hospital.
"He is a tough cookie," said Gillian. "He's finishing up his last 20 weeks of chemotherapy and has two more after Wednesday."
Gillian will walk 3.5 miles everyday this month as a part of the Million Mile Run fundraiser.
