Sumter, SC (WLTX) - Sumter police say a Sumter High Student brought a handgun to school Thursday.
Officers say while investigating an unrelated incident at the school, they got information that the 16-year-old student had the weapon. Once they found the student, they say they found a .45 caliber handgun in the book bag.
Police say the gun wasn't loaded, but the student did have a loaded magazine inside. Officers say when they ran the gun's serial number through their database, they found out the weapon had been reported stolen in Richland County last week.
The student is charged with unlawful carrying of a pistol, possession of a firearm on school property, minor in possession of a handgun, and possession of a stolen firearm. Officers took the juvenile the South Carolina Juvenile Justice Detention Center.
"Sumter School District has a zero tolerance policy for weapons, and the student will receive disciplinary action in accordance with the Sumter School District Code of Conduct," the Sumter School District said in a written statement.
