Richland County, SC (WLTX) - The Richland County Coroner's office has identified the man killed in an exchange of gunfire with a deputy earlier this week.
Coroner Gary Watts says 39-year-old Mitchell Alanda St. Clair died from a gunshot wound to the upper body Monday night.
Around 10:15 Monday night, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says Deputy John Parker tried to stop St. Clair after he drove past a business twice at about 10:30 p.m. Monday and his license plate didn't match the vehicle.
During the traffic stop, deputies say the suspect drove away, and the officer was forced to chase him. During the pursuit, Lott says St. Clair fired at the officer, and the deputy responded by shooting back, hitting and killing the suspect.
Lott says his officer was justified in the incident. The State Law Enforcement Division, as it does in all officer-involved shootings, is in investigating.
