HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - One Lowcountry prosecutor is making some changes he says will help in the fight against domestic violence.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/16OX7SI) that the local prosecutor's office has dropped the use of so-called "drop slips" in such cases.
Prosecutor Duffie Stone handles cases in the Beaufort area and says victims of domestic violence were sometimes pressured to fill out the slips that would drop the charges. Without the slips, all decisions on prosecuting charges will now be up to prosecutor.
Stone has also organized a Crimes Against Women team composed of a victim advocate and a prosecutor who will handle all domestic violence cases in the judicial circuit.
He says that will offer a more coordinated approach to handling domestic violence cases.
