Coach Frank Martin at practice with his players on Sept. 30, 2013.
Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The University of South Carolina men's basketball team held their first practice Monday as they prepare for the upcoming season.
The team went through drills at the Colonial Life Arena as year two of Coach Frank Martin's tenure begins.
"Throughout the summer, we've been trying to teach the parts of the whole and now here, teach the whole and connect those parts and then hopefully about a month from now be able to resemble a basketball team and compete in front of people," Martin said.
His team this year will be young, with many players from last year's squad either graduating or choosing to leave the program. And while Martin said turnover is just part of the business, he jokingly deadling with a group of younger guys takes its toll.
"Take a look at what I looked like the day I got hired and see what I look like now," he said. "The hair's a little whiter and there's a bigger [bald] spot on the top of my head that's going to continue to go that way with these guys. But they're great. "
Martin said while he's got a lot of new players, he also has a core of returning members who he hopes will provide guidance. He said it's an advantage to a coach to have players who've been with you before, something he didn't have a year ago.
"They comprehend me, I comprehend them," Martin explained. "There's direction now for those first-year guys where last year none of those guys had direction."
Fans will be able to see the new unit as a team for the first time in an exhibition game November 3rd at 2 p.m. at the Colonial Life Arena.
