Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Tropical Storm Karen has officially formed in the Southeastern Gulf of Mexico with maximum sustained winds of 60 MPH.
Karen is moving NNW at 13 MPH.
As Karen moves northward, the National Hurricane Center has it reaching hurricane strength briefly before making landfall along the central Gulf Coast as a tropical storm late Saturday night.
Hurricane watches are in effect for the Gulf Coast from Grand Isle Louisiana eastward to Indian Pass Florida. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect from west of Grand Isle to Morgan City Louisinia.
Karen is expected to impact the Southeast Sunday into Monday. Although it will weaken as it moves over land, it could increase rainfall in South Carolina late Sunday through Monday.
