Richland County, SC (WLTX) - Credit rating service Standard & Poor's has given Richland County a AAA long-term credit rating, the highest level possible.
The rating was raised from AA+ this week.
A credit rating is an evaluation of a government's ability to meet its financial obligations. In turn, the rating determines how much interest a borrower --in this case Richland County--pays on its debt.
"Achieving a AAA credit rating has been the goal of Richland County for some time," County Administrator Tony McDonald said. "We are very pleased that our efforts have been recognized and rewarded."
Richland County leaders say the only other counties in the state that have a AAA rating are Greenville and Charleston.
