Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- City of Columbia Mayoral candidate Larry Spyolt withdrew from the race Monday.
In a press conference standing next to current Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin, Spyolt said he's in agreement with Mayor Benjamin's law enforcement platform, and has endorsed Mayor Benjamin himself.
He had originally entered the Mayor's race because he wants to help the City become a safer place.
Spyolt has been appointed by Mayor Benjamin to the chairperson position of a blue ribbon community task force to look at the crime problems Columbia has, and come up with ideas.
Soon after Larry Spyolt's announcement, Mayoral candidate Moe Baddourah sent the following statement:
"Mr. Sypolt is a good man with a bright future, and I certainly wish him the best. But the Mayor's choice of the police station for the news conference was bad optics in a city that hasn't had a police chief in six months.
"It sends the wrong message about our priorities to hold a campaign press conference at the police department while failing to address our very basic public safety challenges.
