BEIJING - Police in China have detained five suspects linked to the Monday crash in Tiananmen Square in what they have described as a "violent terrorist attack," the state Xinhua News Agency reported.
Xinhua reported that the suspects were taken into custody about 10 hours after the crash that killed two nearby tourists and injured 40.
Usmen Hasan, his mother and wife - said to be the occupants of the jeep - were also killed in the crash in which a sports utility vehicle barreled through crowds and burst into flames near the portrait of Mao Zedong on Tiananmen Gate.
The square is well-known as the spot of the 1989 democracy protests, and still draws occasional protests that are quickly put down by security officials.
