With the PGA Championship back in the Carolinas, a former USC-Aiken golfer surged late to claim a share of the lead after round one.
Kevin Kisner, who won earlier this year at Colonial, shot a 4-under 67. His round ended with three birdies in his final five holes, including a 21-foot putt for birdie on the difficult par 4 18th.
The world's number one ranked golfer, Dutch Fork and Coastal Carolina graduate Dustin Johnson, shot a 1-under par 70.
Another Dutch Fork graduate, former USC golfer Wesley Bryan, is 3-over par.
Kisner, who has never won a major tournament, has played in the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow five times. His best showing is a tie for sixth in 2014. He also has three missed cuts at the venue. But the changes made for the PGA Championship seem to agree with Kisner who will have an early tee time on Friday.
