A'ja Wilson Makes USA U23 Team

South Carolina forward A'ja Wilson is two thirds of the way to a Tokyo three-peat.

Wilson has earned a spot on the 2017 USA Basketball Women's U23 National Team, the organization announced Friday.

The team will compete in the 2017 U23 Four Nations Tournament in Tokyo, Japan, Aug 12-15.

This will mark the fourth USA Basketball team for the Heathwood Hall graduate since 2013 and her previous teams have all won gold medals - FIBA U19 World Championship, 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship and 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship. She was the tournament MVP in 2014 and 2015 and went on to win USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year honors in 2015.

The 2017 U23 Four Nations Tournament will have the U.S. facing Australia on Sat., Aug. 12, Canada on Aug. 13 and host Japan on Aug. 15.

Jeff Walz (Louisville) will be the team's head coach with Courtney Banghard (Princeton) and Michelle Clark-Heard (Western Kentucky) as assistant coaches.

Wilson will be making her second trip to Tokyo in the last six weeks as the reigning national champions took part in a trip to Tokyo where they played exhibition games against the Japan National Team. If Wilson can earn a spot on the 2020 Olympic team, which is coached by USC's Dawn Staley, it would mean Wilson would make her third trip to the Land of the Rising Sun.
