Columbia, SC (WLTX) --- Among the people who came to pay their respects to former USC head football coach Jim Carlen were those who worked for him, played for him and even coached against him.

His former players including Rick Sanford, Willie Scott, George Rogers and Kevin Long made their way to the church, along with long-time employees in the athletics department.

But one person who came tried his best to beat Carlen each year in November.

Former Clemson head football coach Danny Ford says he and Carlen became good friends once they stopped playing each other.

Current USC coaches who were there include Steve Spurrier, who was recruited by Carlen in the early 1960's, and soccer coach Mark Berson who was hired by Carlen prior to the 1978 season. In addition to being the head football coach, Carlen was also the athletics director at USC.

Carlen died this past weekend at the age of 79.
