Tampa, Florida (WTSP) -- Tampa Police are investigating a shooting incident involving a Tennessee Titans football player in front of a Tampa high school Monday morning.
Police say 25-year-old Orenthal James (O.J.) Murdock was found in his car in front of Middleton High School suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Murdock died at Tampa General Hospital at 10:43 a.m.
According to CBS Sports, Murdock was excused from practice Sunday for the second day in a row citing personal reasons.
Murdock graduated from Middleton High School in 2005 and started his prep career at Hillsborough High School as a starter on the varsity football team.
He played football with the South Carolina Gamecocks before transferring to Fort Hays State for two seasons. Murdock was highly recruiting coming out of high school, but saw little playing time. In 2005, he was redshirted by the school, and in 2006, he played just four games before he was arrested in Tampa on a shoplifting charge.
He signed with the Titans as an undrafted free agent on July 28, 2011.
Murdock was also a national champion sprinter at the age of 14.
