Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- University of South Carolina trustees Monday approved a two year contract extension for head football coach Steve Spurrier.

The deal means his contract will now expire on December 31, 2017.  The new contract does not change the dollar amount of Spurrier's contract or his incentive-based bonuses.

USC Athletics Director Ray Tanner said he and Spurrier had been having conversations over the last week and a half about a new deal.

"He's excited about what's going on in our university and how he feels about our football program," Tanner said.

"I appreciate the confidence the Board, the President and the Athletics Director have shown by extending my contract," said Coach Spurrier in a statement. "We have achieved a lot of goals but have not yet won the SEC Championship. Hopefully, we can do that within the next couple of years."

Spurrier currently makes $3.3 million with another $1,550,000 in possible bonuses.

Spurrier is the all-time career wins leader at South Carolina with 65 wins as a Gamecock.

As for how much longer Spurrier might coach, Tanner didn't weigh in, but suggested he won't be leaving Columbia anytime soon.

"He's not as young as he once was but he's in better shape than a lot of guys that are a lot younger and maybe he'll coach football for a long time," Tanner said.
