Columbia, SC --- Freshman left-hander Jack Wynkoop hurled 5.1 scoreless innings in his first career start and seventh ranked South Carolina scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie as the Gamecocks defeated Furman 5-2 Tuesday afternoon at Carolina Stadium.
The Gamecocks are now 6-1 on the year with Furman dropping to 5-2.
Wynkoop scattered five hits with no walks while striking out a pair of batters. He earned his first career win and is now 1-0 on the year.
Carolina finished the game with 10 hits while Furman tallied nine for the contest. Max Schrock and Chase Vergason had two hits apiece to lead the Gamecocks.
South Carolina returns to action this weekend with a three-game series against Clemson. Friday's contest at Clemson is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday's Reedy River Rivalry Game from Fluor Field in Greenville will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday's series finale at Carolina Stadium will have a 3 p.m. first pitch.
