Columbia, SC (WLTX) - USC is adding women's sand volleyball as an official sport.
The team will begin playing in spring of 2014.
The school's board of trustees also approved Thursday the construction of a new playing facility that will be located in the Athletic Village, near the new Carolina Tennis Facility.
The team even has a coach, and it's someone already on campus. Moritz Moritz will leave the indoor volleyball team, where he's served as an assistant coach, to become the leader of the new sport.
"I'm very grateful for the chance to begin this new chapter in Gamecock athletics," said Moritz in a statement. "While it's tough to leave behind Scott (Swanson) and the indoor team, I'm excited to get this new sand volleyball team off the ground."
USC is the first SEC school to make sand volleyball an official sport, and only the 31st nationally. The sport will be the 12th female sport added by USC.
