Columbia, SC (WLTX) --- USC's latest facility upgrade has hosted its first game as defending national champion Alabama defeated USC 6-4 Friday night at Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field.
The fans who turned out were treated to an exciting game as USC battled the fourth-ranked team in the country down to the end. A two-run triple in the top of the seventh gave Alabama the lead for good. USC did have the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the inning but Alabama would put an end to the threat to take the first game of the three-game series.
Four homers were recorded in the game. Alabama hit three solo shots in the top of the fourth. Former White Knoll standout Codee Yeske, who scored the game's first run, recorded USC's first home run in the new facility with a blast in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The night began with David and Mitzi Beckham throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. USC women's basketball coach Dawn Staley will have that honor for Saturday's game which starts at 12 noon.
