Columbia, SC --- The USC softball team secured its first winning season in the Beverly Smith era with a pair of wins over the Charlotte 49ers Wednesday at Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field.
Carolina won the first game 10-2 in six innings due to the mercy rule. That was followed by a 5-0 victory in the second game.
In the first game, freshman Ansley Ard from Sumter's Wilson Hall Academy delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning. Charlotte's throw to third base was wide and a second run scored on the play, giving USC the 10-2 win.
Senior pitcher Audrey Broyles recorded a four-hit shutout in the second game.
This also will mark the first winning season for the program since 2007.
