McCollum initially enrolled at Catawba when former Coastal Carolina and current River Bluff head coach David Bennett was an assistant. McCollum eventually transferred to USC where he was a walk-on from 1992-94.

In 2007, he returned to the Pee Dee to get his Masters in education from Francis Marion University.
