The Irmo Yellow Jackets won the 4A soccer state title with a 4-3 (penalty kicks)win over Lexington
Phil Savitz is leaving Irmo after 33 years to take over the program at the new River Bluff program
Gilbert, SC (WLTX) --- Not even 110 minutes of soccer could determine the champion of high school soccer in Class 4A.
It wasn't until penalty kicks when the match between arch-rivals Irmo and Lexington was decided.
The match ended when Lexington goalkeeper Jacob Parton blocked a shot by Mattison Gossett. However, the ball was still in play and it landed with enough momentum to roll into the goal, giving Irmo what was scored a 4-3 victory.
The win gave Phil Savitz his 14th state title in his final appearance as Irmo's head coach.
After 33 years with the Yellow Jackets, Savitz is taking over the program at the new River Bluff program.
In the last week of the regular season, it looked like Savitz would get a head start on his new job. Irmo lost its last three regular season games by 2-1 margins in all three.
However, the playoffs saw Irmo play inspired soccer and end a four-game losing streak in the 4A finals.
