Columbia, SC (WLTX) --- He wouldn't admit to sending a message to three key players but USC head coach Steve Spurrier did say if receivers Bruce Ellington and Damiere Byrd and defensive end Jadeveon Clowney aren't healthy for the season opener, the coaching staff will go with what they have for the Tar Heels.
Ellington and Byrd are nursing hamstring injuries and Clowney is suffering from a bruised shoulder.
"Damiere and Bruce tried to run this morning and it wouldn't surprise me if they are out the first game the way their hamstrings are coming around," said Spurrier.
"We are planning on playing maybe without them. Right now Clowney has a bruised shoulder. If it doesn't come around real soon we may play without him the first game. Right now, they may not play. We have other guys ready to play."
Spurrier made those comments after Monday's evening workout, the first two-a-day workout this preseason.
The team is scheduled to return to the practice fields Tuesday morning.
