Columbia, SC (WLTX) --- USC head football coach Steve Spurrier is a country music fan, so it's no surprise that he used the music of a legend to kick off preparations for the team from Athens.
During the stretching routine before practice, various songs are piped through the large speakers at the proving grounds. For Georgia week, one of the selections was "Georgia On My Mind" by Willie Nelson.
Spurrier laughed and said some of his players thought it was Ray Charles who also performed that song.
In fact, Charles is a native of Albany, Georgia and recorded it back in 1960.
Nelson recorded his version in 1978 and won a Grammy for his effort.
Spurrier says each year, "Georgia On My Mind" is played at practice to remind the players to literally get Georgia i.e. the Bulldogs on their minds.
