Columbia (WLTX) - What does the Gamecocks win over unbeaten St. Mary's in the first round of the Diamond Head Classic and the win over the #1 ranked team, Kentucky, back in 2010 have in common? The President of the United States of course!
Back in 2010, President Obama called the Kentucky team before the game at the Colonial Life Arena to congratulate them on raising money to help earthquake victims in Haiti. At that time, not many thought the Gamecocks could pull off a victory but they did. That final score 68-62. And that was probably the last time fans stormed the court.
Sunday night in Honolulu, President Obama, The First Lady and daughters Sasha and Malia took in the Oregon State vs. Akron game. Craig Robinson, Michelle Obama's brother coaches Oregon State. That game was played right before the Gamecocks took on the Gales.
While the President wasn't at either game or cheering for the Gamecocks, the team seems to play up to a Presidential standard when he is near. So weather it's a phone call, taking in the game or a tweet, Coach Martin should ask the President to keep in touch with the Gamecocks.
