Columbia, SC (WLTX) - If there's one thing you do not want to do, it's challenging Brenton Williams to a game of basketball H.O.R.S.E.
Williams, a senior from Kissimmee Florida, holds the longest streak of consecutive successful free throws made in South Carolina men's basketball history.
Williams' streak ended at 50 when the Gamecocks lost to LSU at Colonial Life Arena on Saturday.
And no, his success at the line is not the product of pure luck.
"My mindset when I first get to the line is to relax and slow down. I do have a routine when I get to the line," Williams says. "Slightly stagger my right foot in front of my left foot. Then I always take three dribbles. As I bend my knees slightly and come up, I follow through in 1 motion."
Despite his success at the line, many may be surprised to know that Williams was never actually taught how to properly shoot a free throw.
"I changed the way I shot my free throws quite often until I found one I was consistent with," Williams says.
Some Gamecock fans say Williams is the best free throw shooter South Carolina has ever seen. It is a label that he is honored to have.
"It means a lot to me for people to say that...because there have been many great players to come and play at USC that people remember," Williams says.
As for the rest of the season, his goals are high.
"My goal is to finish in the 90's percentage wise. And to finish my career with a winning record."
