(WLTX) --- After round one of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Tommy Gainey is just two shots behind the leaders thanks to a 5-under 66.

A pair of major winners are on top of the leaderboard. Bubba Watson, the 2012 Masters Champion and 2009 PGA Champion Y.E. Yang are at -7.

The Bishopville native finished tied for eighth at this event in 2010 so this is a course where he has some fond memories.

His opening round did not have a single bogey and he shot his 66 in spite of putting up pars on the three par 5's.

His best finish in 2014 was a tie for 23rd at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in Mexico.

But if Gainey can string together three more rounds like his opening 18 holes, he should be staring at his first top 10 finish of the season.

Columbia's Jonathan Byrd also had a good day, firing a 3-under 68.
