COLUMBIA, SC - The Palmetto Capital City Classic held its annual press conference at the Columbia Convention Center. this morning. This is the 16th year of the Classic. It's a week long event that culminates with the Benedict Tigers hosting the Livingstone Blue Bears of the CIAA . This is the third straight year for this matchup.

Last year Benedict held on for 5-3 baseball score win over Livingstone. The Tigers would love to repeat that defensive performance because they return a stout defense with 6 preseason All-SIAC players. But they want more than accolades.

"When you got players coming back that are coming back that are real talented like we have you always try to push them just a little bit harder and get a  more out of them because you don't want them to be too relaxed going into the season. You want them to strive to be better " Benedict Defensive Coordinator Ronnie Baker said. "For us it's all about defense. You have to play defense to win and that's how we're built at Benedict."

This year we'll see more points on the board, not only because Benedict has 4 players on the pre-season SIAC offensive team but they'll be in the only game in town for their opener.

"The Capital City Classic is a good Classic. It's the first game of the year here in Columbia. The kids are very excited about playing first," Benedict Offensive Coordinator Kenyan Conner said. "We want to be a productive product on the field and give the fans something to come out and see and give the Benedict alumni and supporters something to be proud of."

The Palmetto Capital City Classic kicks off on Saturday September 2nd at 5 pm in Charles W Johnson Stadium.
