Hempstead, NY (Sports Network) - Stevie Mejia nailed a jumper in the waning
seconds to help the Hofstra Pride hold on for a 52-50 victory over the Georgia
State Panthers in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup at the Mack Sports
Complex.
Mejia had a game-high 17 points and Taran Buie added 12 for Hofstra (4-10,
1-0 CAA) which ended an eight-game losing streak.
R.J. Hunter scored 13 points to lead Georgia State (6-10, 1-2). Devonta White
added 11 points and Manny Atkins netted 10 before fouling out. The Panthers
have lost six of their last seven.
Hofstra led 29-21 at halftime after shooting 46.2 percent, including a 4-of-10
effort from beyond the arc, in the first period. Georgia State fell behind by
hitting just 36.0 percent of its shots overall, including a 1-of-12 showing
from 3-point range.
In the second half the Pride led by as many as 12 points but the Panthers
fought their way back and tied the game at 46-46 with less than four minutes
to play. A pair of jumpers from Mejia and Jordan Allen put Hofstra back up
four, 50-46, but Georgia State scored the next four points to tie the game at
50-50 with 17 seconds remaining. Mejia would hit his game-winner 11 seconds
later.
The two teams combined for only 17 turnovers. Georgia State shot just 36.0
percent in the game including makes on just 2-of-20 shots from 3-point range.
