Pocatello, ID (Sports Network) - Tomas Sanchez scored a career-high 22 points,
including the game-winning jumper in the waning seconds, to lift the Idaho
State Bengals to a thrilling 60-59 win over the Sacramento State Hornets in
Big Sky Conference bout at Holt Arena.
Sanchez shot 8-of-16 from the field, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range, as
Idaho State (4-12, 3-4 Big Sky) won for the third time in its last four
contests. Chris Hansen chipped in 15 points, while Melvin Morgan and Andre
Hatchett scored 11 and 10, respectively.
For Sacramento State (8-7, 3-4), John Dickson tallied a double-double with 19
points and 11 rebounds. Mikh McKinney netted 14 points and Konner Veteto had
13 points for the Hornets, who have lost two of three.
Sacramento State shot just 36.7 percent from the floor in the first half, but
Idaho State was even worse at 30.4 percent, as the Hornets went into
intermission with a 29-21 lead.
The Hornets led throughout the second half until Morgan converted a layup for
the Bengals at the 2:26 mark to give it a 56-55 advantage. Sacramento State
would retake the lead on its next possession following a pair of Cody Demps
free throws, and it would extend its lead to three with just 21 seconds left
on a Dickson bucket. Idaho State responded with a Sanchez layup a few seconds
later, then after the Hornets missed the front end of a one-and-one and the
foul line, Sanchez drilled the game-winner.
The well-matched game had both teams drain seven 3-pointers, and each squad
committed just 10 turnovers apiece.
