University Park, PA (Sports Network) - Roy Devyn Marble scored 22 points and
made 9-of-11 from the foul line to lead the Iowa Hawkeyes to a 74-72 road
victory over the Penn State Nittany Lions in a Big Ten clash at the Bryce
Jordan Center.
Mike Gesell tallied 13 points, while Melsahn Basabe had 11 points and six
rebounds. The Hawkeyes (16-9, 5-7 Big Ten) have won consecutive games after
dropping their previous two.
D.J. Newbill led Penn State (8-16, 0-12) with a game-high 26 points and eight
rebounds. Jermaine Marshall and Sasa Borovnjak each scored 14 points, while
Marshall also added a career-high 10 assists.
Iowa led 38-34 at intermission thanks in part to its dominating 24-11
advantage on the glass. PSU kept the game close by shooting 45.2 percent in
the opening 20 minutes and forcing seven Iowa turnovers.
The Hawkeyes led throughout the second half despite a late push by Penn State,
which cut the score to 66-64 with 4:08 remaining on a Brandon Taylor 3-
pointer. However, the Nittany Lions would get no closer than that. Leading by
three with less than five seconds remaining, Iowa opted to foul PSU to avoid a
potential game-tying 3-pointer. Marshall made both free throws, then Marble
made 1-of-2 at the other end for Iowa, and PSU wasn't left with enough time
for a desperation heave.
PSU lost despite committing just six turnovers. The Hawkeyes outscored the
Nittany Lions at the foul line, 20-10.
