Frank Martin Grows The Game In the Palmetto State

USC head men's basketball coach Frank Martin has made it a point to schedule the likes of Benedict, Newberry, Coker, Francis Marion, USC-Aiken and Lander..

Bringing in Division II schools from the state is Martin's way to giving back to those communities and growing the game of basketball in the state. Martin says each year, he wants to bring in a different school to give their players and coaches a chance at competing in an 18,000-seat arena.

"It's not fair to play the same one over and and over or bypass schools that we have not given the opportunity to play," Martin said Monday on the SEC summer teleconference.

"Not taking a shot at Clemson here, they do things however it fits their program and their vision. But our university name is South Carolina. I think it's very important for us to give the smaller schools the opportunity to play in South Carolina, in our building and give them a check to help fund their program. It's something that's very much needed to upgrade their programs and it builds basketball within our state."

Other Division II schools that could be next in the rotation include Claflin and Limestone. USC will unveil its non-conference schedule in the coming weeks.
