Statment from Mayor Steve Benjamin:

You know, whether I'm walking down Main Street, kayaking down the Saluda River or having a conversation over coffee with a city resident, I am constantly reminded that Columbia is truly a special place.

We are a city of talent, a city of excitement and we are a city of promise.Columbia has the potential to be a truly great city because, more than anything else, this city has heart.

I can think of few who better capture our spirit and embody our heart than the 2012 University of South Carolina Gamecock Baseball Team.

Following the example set by Coach Ray Tanner, one of the truest leaders I've ever had the pleasure to know, these young men have demonstrated a commitment to excellence and determination to achieve that reaches far beyond our expectations.

Whether by beating the odds to reach the College World Series Championship Finals three years in a row, or by carrying themselves with pride and respect when the game is done, they exemplify our highest traditions of dedication, leadership and service both on and off the field of play.

Simply put, they inspire us to believe in what is possible. For that, if nothing else, they have our undying love and admiration.

So, on behalf of the City of Columbia, let me congratulate Coach Tanner and the 2012 University of South Carolina Gamecock Baseball Team on a wonderful season.

Welcome home and thank you for helping us believe in heroes.
