Far Hills, NJ (Sports Network) - Ellen Port, a five-time USGA champion, has
been selected to captain the 2014 United States Curtis Cup Team, the United
States Golf Association announced Wednesday.
"Ellen is one of the great USGA amateur champions of the modern era," said Dot
Paluck, chairman of the USGA Women's Committee. "She has well represented the
United States in past Curtis Cup matches, and we are proud to have her as
captain of the 2014 team."
Port won the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur four times and the USGA Senior Women's
Amateur last year. She joined two-time Curtis Cup captain Carol Semple
Thompson as the only two women to win both titles.
"It's an honor and privilege to serve the USGA, my future players and the game
that I've grown to love as the captain of the 2014 USA Curtis Cup Team," Port
said. "It's an added bonus to have the venue in my hometown, at a club that is
so rich in golf history and tradition."
The 2014 matches will take place at St. Louis Country Club from June 6-8.
Port, who lives in St. Louis, is an eight-time Missouri Women's Amateur
champion.
The competition, held every two years, pits a team of female amateurs from the
U.S. against one from Great Britain and Ireland.
Great Britain and Ireland rallied to win the 2012 Curtis Cup, 10 1/2 - 9 1/2
in Scotland. However, the United States leads the all-time series, 27-7-3.
