FLORENCE, SC - The 86th annual South Carolina Golf Association amateur championship wrapped up Sunday afternoon.
Former AC Flora Falcon Ryan Marter is headed to Wofford and he was in the final group. Ryan finishes at 6 under par two shots back of the winner.
"I'm boosting with confidence right now. Getting more confidence every time I play but I'm ready for that first win thought. That would put it over the top," Marter said.
A week from tomorrow Marter will be at the Riviera Country Club just outside L.A. for the US Amateur Championship.
The winner was one Gregg Jones, a Florence native and the Florence Country Club is his home course so he maximized his local knowledge. Gregg shoots a one over par 71 in his final round. He finishes at eight under par, good enough for a two shot win.
It's the first time since 2003 that Gregg has competed in this event - that's the year he helped Clemson win the national championship. 14 years later Jones returns to this event and leaves with the title.
This is one I've always really wanted to win," Jones said "I remember 2003. You just don't forget the bad shots for sure. I was in the hunt at Chanticlear . I ended up finishing third. But I dumped in the water on 9 to a back right pin and it ended up doing me in really. It was the end of me. I couldn't recover from it. So this is the first one I've played in since then so yeah just real blessed to be on top. What a great week. "
Jones had also not played a competitive round as an individual since pga tour qualifying school in 2009 but he said with this event at home, he couldn't pass up the chance to play in it and Jones is your state amateur champion
With Jones's victory, 17 former or current Clemson golfers have won the South Carolina Amateur dating to 1975. Former US Open champion Lucas Glover is a former champion as is Bill Haas.
