Huegel's Preparation Pays Off

Coming off a national championship season, Clemson will begin preparations for 2017 in just a few weeks. Kicker Greg Huegel addresses the question of possible complacency in the camp.

Greg Huegel vividly remembers his first meeting with Clemson head football coach Dabo Swinney.

Huegel had spent 2014 as an observer of the Tigers. But after several tryouts ended up with the "No room on the roster for another kicker" response, Huegel received a call out of the blue from special teams coach Danny Pearman, telling him he was on board with the Tigers.

Huegel had continued to kick on his own just in case opportunity knocked. The next step was to show the coaches and his new teammates what he could do. Huegel was called on to attempt a 47-yard field goal.

But before that, the head coach stopped Huegel in his tracks.

"He was like 'Who are you? I've never seen you before. You must be our new kicker'," Huegel recalled Swinney asking.

"I was like 'yes, sir. Yes, sir.'  and this is like as I'm walking up, completely surrounded. He didn't even know my name. Now, to this day, he likes to joke about it."

Swinney is well aware of Huegel's name now. Before the start of the 2015 season, starter Ammon Lakip was suspended. Huegel would take over as the starter and go on to set a school record with 138 points. He was named a Freshman All-American by USA Today, the first Clemson player to earn All-America honors as a freshman.

He followed that up with 113 points last year as the Tigers captured their second national championship in school history. In fact, it was Huegel who recovered the onsides kick following the game-winning touchdown, leading to Watson running out the clock. 

Huegel will begin 2017 third in Clemson history in career extra points. As far as complacency is concerned, Huegel says that will not happen with him nor does he expect that to be an issue with his teammates.
