Competition Is Improving Gamecock Football

Sometimes it helps having a good offense to battle in practice and the South Carolina defense is taking advantage of that in this year's training camp

COLUMBIA, SC - Much has been said about the Gamecock offense this offseason but what about the defense? They are focused on creating a more of a pass rush, stopping the run and generating turnovers much like they did a year ago

The USC defense have a ton of experience coming back this season. They have two or three seniors on the defensive line, linebacking corps, and in the secondary. Seniors like Bryson Allen-Williams will help some of the younger players who will see time this season but that USC offense is helping them as well.

"We just know we're getting better as team going up against each other every day. I feel like that's going to help us out for the season. That's the biggest thing,"Allen-Williams said. "We compete right now but we know we got to play against another team. Going against each other, getting better and get to work those guys that you know are going to play on the next level it helps out a lot in practice."

USC defensive coordinator echoed those comments. If the offense is strong with playmakers then the effort of the defense has to pick up in order to keep pace with the playmaking in practice.

"When you're playing against guys like Deebo Samuel and Bryan Edwards every single day you have no choice but to get better. That's what it's up. When we talk about iron sharpens iron that's what we're referring to. We got really good offensive skill and it's getting our defense skill better as well."
