COLUMBIA, SC - "Does anyone ever give Clemson credit because they play South Carolina? Does anyone ever give South Carolina credit because they play Clemson?," Martin asked during his weekly press conference.
That's a good question from South Carolina's head coach.
After playing Florida this Saturday the Clemson Tigers return home next Tuesday for their next game. That's when they host South Carolina. Both teams are off to solid starts to their seasons.
The two head coaches, Brad Brownell and Frank Martin, are good friends. Despite both coaches improving their programs Martin believes that still aren't getting the respect they deserve from national media and from a RPI standpoint, even when the in-state schools play against each other in highly anticipated rivalry games. Those games are important when it comes to the non-conference matchups on their schedule-especially in the eyes of coach Martin.
"They don't even acknowledge the fact that we play at Clemson this year when talking about our non-conference schedule. I know Brad (Brownell) feels the same. He never gets any credit because he plays South Carolina every single year. That's a shame because he runs a real good basketball program. Brad is one heck of a basketball coach. They've been a good basketball team every year I've been in this league," Martin said.
Last year Clemson defeated USC at home before the Gamecocks would eventually go on to the Final Four. So USC had the hardware but the Tigers still have bragging rights.
With both teams having some early success it will be interesting to see how their seasons pan out and how a win or loss can boost their RPI rankings as the NCAA tournament continues to draw closer.
