Columbia, SC (WLTX) --- You could say the Gamecock baseball team has adopted the phrase "speak softly and carry a big stick."
But in this case, it's a carrot stick.
Last week, teammates Grayson Greiner, Joey Pankake, Joel Seddon and Brison Celek decided that something needed to be done to get out of their slump.
"We were kind of in a rut...we had just lost two midweek games to teams we felt like we should've beaten. We decided we were going to wake up early one morning and go to the pet store to see what they had," Greiner said.
"We saw Byron and decided we were going to get him."
Byron, the one month old bunny, accompanied the team to Auburn this past weekend, the same series that LB Dantzler's lucky beta fish "Reptar" went along with the team for, back in 2012.
In both of those series, the Gamecocks came home victorious.
"Everybody loves Byron," junior infielder Joey Pankake said. "Pregame, he's up there running around the locker room, everybody's playing with him, so it's brought a good vibe to the team."
The team isn't the only group of people who have taken to Byron.
A twitter account was created, and in under a week, has over 3,000 followers.
Joel Seddon said it's fun for the four of them to show off their "son."
"He doesn't really know how famous he is yet," Seddon says.
One can be sure that this squad has high hopes for their hoppy new friend.
"Maybe he'll bring us some good luck...and keep getting more famous," Pankake says.
And the guys say, situation permitting, Byron will make trips with the team as well.
