Quarterback Questions Still Loom For The Gamecocks

USC Coach Will Muschamp's thoughts after his team's loss.

COLUMBIA, SC (WLTX) - After five weeks of football one would hope that the South Carolina Gamecocks would have a quarterback to go under center for the rest of the season. But after this week's 24-13 loss to Texas A&M and week of practice before their next game who knows.

We may be back to where we started at the beginning of the season with two quarterbacks seeing time again. It looked that way on this past Saturday.

Freshman Brandon McIlwain in his third start didn't have his best outing. He threw his first interception of the season and finished 9-15 for 34 yards through the air and only had seven on the ground.

Muschamp has shown he'll go with whoever ends a game strong. Orth earned the start against Mississippi State in week two after leading the game clinching scoring drive at Vanderbilt in a 13-10 win.

McIlwain led two 80 yard scoring drives in the second at Mississippi State and assumed the starting quarterback roll for ECU. The Gamecocks won 20-15 before falling to Kentucky in a 17-10 final.

Through five games McIlwain has thrown for two touchdown passes and 567 yards with a 52 percent completion rate. He also adds 166 rushing yards and two scores which is third on the team.

Orth has made three appearances and two starts this season. He's completing 57 percent of his passes for 373 yards. He has yet to throw a touchdown pass this season.

The silver lining is that both quarterbacks have thrown just one interception all season.

Tight end Hayden Hurst, the former pro baseball player and Gamecocks leading receiver, even completed a pass for nine yards against the Aggies on Saturday so maybe they are three quarterbacks seeking time.

But in all seriousness with starting receivers missing time (Deebo Samuels and Bryan Edwards out with hamstring injuries) it will be a challenge for whoever the quarterback will be heading into Saturday's game against Georgia.

Muschamp will hold his weekly press conference at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Williams Brice Stadium. USC hosts Georgia this coming Saturday for 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
