Ray Tanner Updates Baseball Coaching Search

WLTX caught up with South Carolina Athletics Director Ray Tanner and gives his insight on the baseball coach search, Dawn Staley and Frank Martin being honored by the Tip-Off Club and the College World Series.

COLUMBIA, SC - It's been 20 days since Chad Holbrook resigned as South Carolina's baseball coach. South Carolina Athletics Director Ray Tanner is making sure he brings in the right guy to take over the program.

We've heard a lot of thrown around as top candidates for the opening and Tanner believes that USC is one of the best programs in the country.

The Gamecocks missed out on the NCAA tournament two of the last three years and the next coach will have to make sure that the Gamecocks are relevant when it comes to competing in the national tournament. With those expectations Tanner says a new coach will be announced pretty soon.

"The search is going well. We have a beautiful place to come have an experience as coach like Coach Staley and Coach Martin have had so we're looking forward in the next day or next few days to make a decision on who our new coach will be," Tanner said.

Tanner led the Gamecocks to back to back national titles during his tenure and someone with experience with the program is not necessarily a requirement at this point of the process.

"I think we have a wonderful place to be. You would like to have some people in the program that might've been here in the past but that's not always the case. But we'll be very successful going forward. We're looking forward to naming a new coach in baseball in the next few days."
