BLOG: USC vs. Mississippi State

Starkville, MS (WLTX) - Mississippi State defeated USC 27-14 Saturday night in Starkville.

Here's our running blog from the game.

11:14 p.m. 

That's a final. USC drops a tough one in Starksville, 27-14. They're now 1-1 on the season. They'll play East Carolina in their home opener next Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium.

 

11:06 p.m.

Gamecocks are not done yet. 

McIllwain engineers another TOUCHDOWN drive, thrown a 4-yard pass to KC Crosby.

10:40 p.m. 

Miss State's Westin Graves kicks a 28-yard field goal to extend the Mississippi State lead. 

Miss State 27, USC 7 

9:30 4th QTR

10:26 p.m. 

TOUCHDOWN Gamecocks! 

Brandon McIllwain finished off a 12 play, 80 yard drive with an 18-yard TD pass to A.J. Turner. Gets the Gamecocks on the board just before the end of the 3rd. 

Miss State 24, USC 7

:05 3rd QTR

9:54 p.m.

Odd call by Mississippi State. Tried to fake a punt, but USC didn't bite on it. 

9:38 p.m. 

After over an hour delay, the team's finally were allowed to return to the field.

8:51 p.m. 

Lighting detected in Starkville. Fans being asked to seek shelter away from the stands. 

8:35 p.m. 

Miss State kicker Westin Graves gets a little redemption. He missed two FGs in last week's loss, but hits a 27-yard field goal.

HALF: Mississppi State 24, USC 0

8:23 p.m. 

USC fans a little frustrated--and so are some former players. Bruce Ellington, who's now with the Rams, tweeted "Somebody had to step up and make a play.

8:16 p.m.

Miss State's Fitzgerald finds tight end Jordan Thomas, who wins a jump ball contest with USC's D.J. Smith in the endzone for the touchdown. 

Miss State 21, USC 0

3:21 2nd QTR

8:08 p.m.

Odd series for both teams. USC running back AJ Turner fumbled, giving the Bulldogs the ball at the 14. But then Miss State's Fitzgerald gets picks off by TJ Holloman on the next play, who then takes it back out to the 18.

USC's drive stalled, though, and they had to punt.

8:04 p.m.

Mississippi State is winning the stat game at this point too. They've outgained USC 230-78 in total yards. Bulldogs have 151 yards rushing. 

7:58 p.m. 

USC QB Perry Orth was intercepted by Jamal Peters trying to air it out long to big-play man Bryan Edwards.

Bulldogs get the ball back leading 14-0 with 10:25 in the 2nd QTR

7:49 p.m.

Bulldogs score again. QB Nick Fitzgerald flipped it to the left side of the field to Nick Ross, who ran around for a second before heaving it 17-yards in the back of the endzone to find a wide open Donald Gray

7:34 p.m.

USC kicker Elliott Fry tried to match his game-winner last week with another 55-yarder this week, but it came up just short.

Bulldogs still lead 7-0 

"15 1st QTR:

7:24 p.m. 

USC came up with a huge stop with about 6:37 to play in the 1st. Mississippi State used a 74-yard quarterback run to get inside the 10, but the Gamecocks didn't let them store. 

Still 7-0 Bulldogs.

7:14 p.m.

Bulldogs strike first. Mississppi State QB Fitzgerald finds Fred Ross for a 6-yard TD pass.

Miss State 7, USC 0

7:00 p.m. 

True to their tradition, the Mississippi State fans are clanging the cowbell.

6:50 p.m.

Just before the game, USC announced that redshirt freshman Sherrod Pittman had been suspended for two games.

He'll miss not only tonight's game, but also next week's home opener against East Carolina.
