USC Prepares for Oregon State

Seattle, WA (WLTX) - South Carolina spent part of Monday practicing as they get ready to play Oregon State in the second round of the NCAA women's basketball tournament.

The team went through drills and discussed strategy at the American Airlines Arena in Seattle.

USC won their first game Sunday over Cal State Northridge 73-58. While USC was in control for the whole contest, the team admitted it wasn't their best performance as the top seeded team struggled to put away the 16th-seeded Matadors. The Gamecocks enjoyed a size advantage in the contest, which allowed them to win the rebounding battle, but it's something they can't rely on Tuesday against the Beavers.

"They [Oregon State] have a lot of size, " said USC guard Tiffany Mitchell. "I trust in our post players that they're going to take on that challenge and it's going to be a good matchup."

It's not just the big players USC will have to watch out for: Oregon State also has a good point guard, Sydney Wiese, who Staley says the team uses to run much of their offense.

"Sydney is a little different point guard because she's long, she has great court vision, she can handle the ball extremely well and they do a great job at putting her in positions to utilize all of her skill set," Staley said.

Last year, the Gamecocks lost in the round of 32, but Staley said a lot of things have changed over the last 12 months.

"We have a totally different basketball team one who has proven that they can play with anybody," she said. "We're bigger. People scout us a lot differently than they have in the past. What we need to do is really concentrate on what got us here, just playing solid basketball playing within ourselves, and playing the style of play we've played all season long."

USC takes on Oregon State Tuesday at 9:40 p.m. Eastern Time. WLTX will have coverage here on, on News19, and on New19 James Starks' Twitter account: @JamesStarksWLTX
